Weekly Update: Start of A New Era?

Hello everyone,

Welcome to the Weekly Update for this week (though I have not been updating the news weekly recently)! Recently, we came across the "wild" fire in California, Trump's upcoming inauguration, and the TikTok ban in the United States. Usually, I would choose to cover one topic, but let's cover all three this time since everything is related to everything. Let's go!

First, the wildfire in California started destroying LA, causing many residents to lose their homes. As a result, millions of dollars of property damage were lost to the fire. Well, let's talk about property insurance. Some months ago, LA residents unknowingly lost their property damage insurance. After the fire consumed their property, many residents reported the insurance was insufficient to cover everything they lost. Yes, this further reinforces the fact that the American insurance system has been a mess.

However, we cannot let a failed insurance system ruin our lives. One lesson we should take away from this is to always read insurance policies or try to keep up with the new terms of insurance services. Reading a long list of rules could be irritating, but it's worth it. Additionally, when we try to find a place to live, we should always check the geographic conditions to avoid putting ourselves at risk of natural disasters. People seem to overlook natural disaster factors when they look for a place to settle.

Heading off to our second news of the day, let's talk about Trump's upcoming inauguration. Wait, that will happen tomorrow. The inauguration marked the start of a new phase. Let's preview some changes that Trump would bring to our daily lives. Trump planned to cut the federal budget by cutting the federal workers in certain departments.

In 2020, the trend of working at home started because of the pandemic, and many companies continued to settle with it. Sure, working at home provided a more convenient work culture with more flexibility and personalized workspace; nonetheless, such an environment also gave space for distraction and slack-offs. Trump's administration team announced that employees would be required to return to the office to work, allowing no slack-offs from the employees they keep.

Finally, let's talk about the most recent news: TikTok ban. It all started with rumors of China stealing information through TikTok. After years of investigation, TikTok was blocked in America yesterday. The users could no longer successfully log in, enranging the users (mainly young adults). Well good for them, Trump promised to make an effort to bring TikTok back after he took office. Regardless, TikTok still had its era. Let's look at TikTok's impact on society, both positive and negative ones.

When TikTok was first introduced to America, many influencers took the popularity wave and rode it to secure their fame and success. Small businesses found their opportunities on TikTok because of the app's unique algorithm. Over the years, we started vibing to different music, taking in fashion trends, learning new memes such as Skibidi toilet, and adapting new slang, all thanks to TikTok. Although we had lots of fun with TikTok, many problems still occurred. Instead of being productive, people spend time excessively scrolling through TikTok videos. Young people experience many mental health problems through cyberbullying and negative comments. Additionally, consuming short videos on TikTok shortens attention span, especially for children and teenagers, negatively affecting their ability to study and take in information.

TikTok may not be a perfect app for society, but nothing is perfect. Through this app, we all had some fun and dissatisfaction. If TikTok manages to return to the market, hooray for the small businesses and influencers and all the loyal users. Otherwise, we could accept that it's the end of the era, and TikTok had a good run. We were good before social media emerged. And we will continue to find our way to live without TikTok if it's banned.

That's it for this week's coverage of the news. Hope you enjoy it! Follow this blog on Instagram @businessnewsandmore to keep track of what we're up to. If you want to explore other topics, check out the other articles here! Bye :)
